A kind of cell division in which a cell (usually diploid) gives rise to four daughter cells (usually haploid) with half as many chromosomes. Meiosis is an essential part of normal sexual reproduction. It gives rise to gametes which subsequently fuse to restore the original chromosome number. Contrast with mitosis.
